Fruits, vegetables, chickens and horses happily coexist on our 135 acre organic family farm. The Starr Ranch was founded by William H. Starr a wagon maker along with his brother Fred W. Starr. The original address was 17555 Starr Road and has been changed to 15911 Bowman Road, Cottonwood, California 96022. In it's hay day the Starr Ranch was well over 500 acres and included a ferry to cross the South Fork Cottonwood Creek. When the river was up too high in the winter supplies were pulled by a cable with a bucket to help settlers on their journey. The beautiful home they built stood until the mid 1970's when owner Eugene Hilchey had it taken down. I remember how pretty it was yet strange with a barber chair in the living room in front of the fire place and a honky-tonk player piano on the porch. It could have been one of those rough establishments that provided entertainment to patrons.
We’ve farmed organic since the day we planted our first heirloom tomatoes over 25 years ago. This photo was taken in the 1970's when we first moved to the Starr Ranch.

Fred and William Starr built wagons on the Starr Ranch, had a store selling supplies to settlers. May have been a bar with the honky-tonk player piano seen on the porch in the photo.

The original barn built by the Starr brothers still stands today in 2015 a relic from the past.
